As I stated in chapter one, currently there are over 43 million Americans who have disabilities. And based on my work experience and research, I believe that a good percentage of people with disabilities continue to enter the criminal justice system as criminals, victims, and witnesses. Also I have shown that people with disabilities often require extra items from criminal justice professionals such as extra time, patience, transportation and communication accommodations etc. Thus, I believe that I have created a beneficial guide for criminal justice professionals to know how and be comfortable to effectively interact with people who have disabilities by discussing the following items in this capstone document:
General descriptions of common disabilitiesA literature review of the issues that criminal justice professionals encounter when interacting with people who have disabilitiesSurvey results regarding how various criminal justice professionals feel when interacting with people who have disabilitiesActual step by step instructions to guide criminal justice professionals along with training scenariosAlso a list of many resources enabling criminal justice professionals to research and/or get assistance on various issues in their workFurthermore, as I previously indicated in chapter three, my survey results show that some criminal justice professionals don’t desire more training regarding people who have disabilities. However, all of the criminal justice professionals who participated in my survey said that they believe that people who have disabilities can be life threatening. Thus, I intend to use this capstone document to further train criminal justice professionals on how to effectively and appropriately interact with people who have disabilities. In fact, the founders of a criminal justice training company called, UPSIDE Training for Life, already have asked me to create an ongoing credited class based on this capstone document. Furthermore, I hope to also use this capstone document to obtain full-time employment with a criminal justice agency in the future by demonstrating my master level knowledge of criminal justice issues, and how I can be a benefit to their agency.
